From the mouth of the rat...

future cult classic - caribou

What is a 'future cult classic'? It is essentially a song that dominates the reminiscence of a film; a song so powerful enough that the film in question just wouldn't be the same without it. For our current cult classics, I'm thinking Echo & The Bunnymen's cover of The Doors' 'People Are Strange' in Lost boys, 'Misirlou' in Pulp Fiction etc (you get the gist). What about the future then; what song of today will be a 'future cult classic' on the soundtrack of tomorrow?

Caribou's 'Odessa'. Okay so that may seem a little naive and rather unfair to brand these psychedelic Canadians with such a gigantic title, but their latest offering Swim is as visually encapsulating as it is musically.

‘Odessa’ essentially serves as a taster for Caribou’s exotica-intoxication. It's a trip seemingly ridden off the back of a total mind-fuck with its calming and tantalising layers acting as an antidote to a damaged world, subsequently now replaced by the soothing streams of subtle electronica. It deserves to accompany a film on the same wave length as Stand By Me, but perhaps with a little more acid.
